Day 5 Winner:

Amykins said...
I was thinking of joining a kit club so I started researching...but there are so many! For those who are already members of kit clubs, how did you decide which one to join? What should I be comparing other than price and length of required subscription. The spreadsheet I made isn't working for me. I want to join ALL of them!

You have given us a lot of great ideas to report on. Thanks! Please email your full name and mailing address to thescrapreview@hotmail.com so we can send out your prize!

Now back to the FUN...If you have looked around our site already you may have realized that here at TSR we know that you, as a consumer, are the ones who are calling the shots. This site won't work for you if we don't report on what YOU want to know about. So each day of this launch, our comments will be based on a certain theme and the products in that theme you are interested in seeing reviewed.

But first, today's prize....

Halfway Cafe set of Fat Quarters by Cosmo Cricket.
Cosmo Cricket is just one of the genius companies who have started making fabric out of their paper lines. To see what I made with my Cosmo Cricket Fabric click here. You have to scroll down about halfway through the post to see a reversable toddler hat and a plush bunny I created. Or for a fabulous resourse filled with fat quarter ideas and patterns click here.

To purchase Cosmo Cricket Fat Quarters visit these sites....but not until after you see if you win!

Z and S Fabrics, Quiltshops.com, Fabrics.com, Equilter.com, Pennington Quilts

To be eligible to win, please:

- leave a comment on this post telling us what you feel about NEW vs OLD. Are you always on the hunt and watching out for the newest tool/product/paper line? Or would you like to see reviews of some of the old reliables? Comment must be posted today by MIDNIGHT PST.

I am not biased at all. I would love to see reviews on old and new things..

Ashley Harris said...

I actually like both. I mean the cricut has been out for a couple of years now, but I would still love a review. I would like either or! WOO HOO!

AngMomof3 said...

In this economy, I think I'd like to know more about the old. I know so many scrappers who buy "stuff" and then don't use it... maybe because they don't have the best tips and techniques? You could definitely help out there.

But who isn't excited about learning about new products? I think you can do both.

Joli said...

I am bad about buying all of the newest stuff. I have been trying to do better about incorporating my older stuff into what I do. Revisiting some older products may be a fun way to make the old new again with fresh ideas.

Scrapycandy said...

Both Old and New is ok with me...I'm always using old favorites and I buy on sale...which means last years papers, etc. But punches, etc. last forever.

Heidi Y said...

Pretty fabric! Reviewing both is fine... and maybe if reviewing a new item/tool, mention some oldie-but-goodies that is close to doing the same job... I'm all for new, but lately I've been trying to use what I have. And keeping price in mind in the reviews would help, too.

Robin said...

I would like a to be able to read about old and new - sometimes you forget about some of the items that are already out there that work great.

Rebecca White said...

I look for a few new thing with each CHA but I don't have money for a lot of new things. I would love to see how you could use a few new items- maybe new accents with old lines of paper to make it a mix of both.

Julie McD said...

Prefer a mixture of both. It helps to see the review of the older tools/product to serve as a reminder to me to pull it out and I like to find new ways to use them! On another note, I just have to say YUM to those gorgeous fabrics! Gotta get me some of them since I got a new sewing machine recently! Happy Weekend!

mustangkayla said...

I like a little of both! Admit it, we all hoard paper, so sometime its fun to see projects using older papers to help inspire you to dig into your stash!

Rhayne said...

Now, now, let's not be exclusive! I like some old and some new :o) For my tools, adhesives, etc., I generally prefer items which have proven their worth through the years. For all the pretties, I'm usually looking for through the new stuff. I tend not to want to use the same pp over and over, or the same style of ribbons. I want each of my pages to look different. So, I guess I don't really answer your question but instead ask you to review it all <3

Cheers!

CJandErik said...

I would love to see old stuff reviewed against new stuff.

I tend to like my old standbys.

The Starks' said...

I enjoy the new stuff immensely, however nothing brings me more joy than when I use something that I have had in my stash for YEARS and I am able to make it look current and up to date. Besides...I have such a GINORMOUS stash of stuff, I need to be able to work with the old and make it look new. :o)

Michelle said...

I would love to hear reviews about the old. Money is tight (as it seems with everyone these days) and I would love to see new ideas for the scrap I already have.

Julie O. said...

I wouldn't mind both. I'm mostly into the 'new' but then there just some good ol' classics like 'Halfway Cafe!!' ;)

Penny Smith said...

I am always looking for what is no... BUT there are some things that leave too fast... like the Pink Paislee little doodle alphas... in 6 months, the block were sold out, you couldn't order them, and they were "old". But Thickers, they last! Which is wonderful!!

I love vontage too-if that is a version of the "old". :) Milk caps, vintage buttons and music sheets... yummy stuff!

Amy said...

I enjoy both, really. Comparisons of new products with similar old reliable products are always extra awesome!!!

A splash of Sherry said...

I would like to see how to use some old things. You always have things laying around that you just don't use. I would love to get inspiration to use them up.

Kimberly said...

Oh my, that material is delicious! I love some older papers. But I am learning that although I like them, I do not scrap them as the main paper. I will use them as a layered piece. I tend scrap with paper and do not purchase it again. However, embellishments are different. One can never go wrong with Prima, 7 Gypsies, and Maya Road.

Jaime said...

I would love to see both. But I do love seeing the new stuff. The new stuff is exciting, and I would like to see if it does what it is supposed to do easily

Wendy said...

I would like both! I am always looking at the new releases and I do buy some of the products. But like most scrappers, I have a stash that will last forever. So going back to get a fresh look at the old would inspire me to use what I have and enjoy it.

Amy said...

I think a combination of both would be best. I think there's a lot of pressure out there to have the latest and greatest ~ especially if you want to submit your work, but that's not always feasible (budget, proximity to storees that sell the NEW stuff, etc)

Dana said...

That is one of my fave Cosmo Cricket lines -- love the fabric. I would love to see both old and new, especially with trimmers, tools, etc.

Mandy said...

I like the new stuff but I love the oldie but good stuff too especially the older more reliable stuff that is really worth the purchase.

Betsy said...

I like a mix, I love new toys (what gal doesn't) but if there is something I already have on my desk that will work just as well, I'd like to know that too!

Chelsea said...

New things! I already know that Bazzill makes great cardstock, but what about some new upstart? And what about new Bazzill textures? Can you glue it to acrylic easily? Is it durable? You get the idea...

Aimee said...

i love to pull out my old stuff every now and again. i've made some of my best layouts with cool old product that's used in a new way.

new is fun too... i'm just sayin ;)

Veronica said...

I would love to see some reviews on the "Reliables!" I think in this time and state of our country, we need to "repurpose" our Reliable products!!!

Erica said...

Since I have a room full of scrap supplies, I would like to hear about old things and new things too! Cause I obviously like buying new scrap stuff.

Colleen said...

I used to be all about new, but now I actually like some of both. A little new mixed with the tried and true!

Jenn said...

Chances are it will all be new to me :)

Karen said...

I would love to see reviews of old things--anything to help ease the stash crunch would be good!

Shay said...

Like most everyone else I prefer a mixture of old and new product reviews. There are so many products out there new and old that not everyone has tried everything even if it has been around for ages.

And perhaps even comparisons...how do oldie, but goodies stack up against the next, greatest new thing? How about reviews of new additions/accessories to "old" tools (new templates, add-ons, dies, software, etc) too?

Etta said...

If I don't have it, then it's new to me!!! I'd like both!!

Unlikely Kreator said...

old or new, i think the most important factors to me would be quality n reliability.

have a wonderful weekend!

Jingle said...

I mix it up. I love the latest and greatest and I'm often inspired greatly by a fantastic new product, but I also have some favorites that I turn to and even buy over and over again because they just work for me

Cassi said...

i'm obssessed with new and always looking for ways to combine the two. i usually have to buy everything the second it comes out.

Debbie said...

I use to try to buy all the new stuff but in todays economy I am not buying much at all. I am going back to my stuff and using it more often.

The one weakness I have is paper. I love to hear about the new companies and how their paper rates. If I really love it, I will buy it.

ArlaMo said...

I wouldn't mind seeing some old stuff, but I have to admit loving all that is new and exciting!

MotherofJackals said...

Honestly I'd like to see both. I think it would be cool to have maybe a "flashback" tool/product spotlight once a month. This would allow those new to the hobby or those wanting to try something "new to them" to see what is really out there. Trends change so fast it's easy to miss them if you don't have a great source for products.

It would also be great to maybe compare the "old" version of some tools to the updated ones...is it worth buying a new one...let the scrap review tell you.

Finally what is new and hot might take months or years to hit some stores/areas. So even a report on something that came out at CHA 2008 could be very on time for many of us.

Jan said...

No prejudice here either. Love new and love classic.

sue-bubbles said...

It would be wonderful to be inspired in how to use old tools in new ways, and how to blend them with all the new innovations!

Cosmo Cricket fabric, how cool is that! And eligible for worldwide shipping..woohoo!

I think Old is always valid because not everyone is able to afford to be buying regularly. It would be fantastic to see a rehash of some old favourites. This doesn't devalue the excitement that comes with discovering the new...it is amazing the quality and unique products that are being created! So I think there is value in both new and old!

meganklauerphotography said...

I love to have the new, must have goodies, but I also love the challenges where they ask you to dig out all of your old stuff.

justin and jess said...

I think both. And I would like to see how the new matches up against the old. It is also always fun to see how our old stuff can be used to follow the current scrapbook trends.

Renee said...

I'd like to see reviews on both. Even if somethings been out a while, I may not have gotten around using it or seeing other people use it.

Ashley said...

I would love to see both. I am new to scrapping and have a lot to learn. I think whatver does he trick, old or new works for me.

carpediem said...

I'd love to read reviews on both new and old products! If you review the "old" it may remind me why I purchased the product in the first place (LOL!)and also give me the chance to reduce my "stash"!

Catherine said...

I'd love to see reviews of old reliables. It would be an inspiration to use some of that stash of product and paper I have on hand!!

Christine said...

I think we get tons of inspiration on the new stuff and that's where we lose inspiration on the old stuff, so I'm all for using up the old stash! Oh, and pick me! :o)

ckmom78 said...

ooh , i love the new, but agree it would be neat to see old too, we all know we have ton's stashed!!

Nathalie said...

I sue both new and old stuff from my stash..if I love it it doesn't matter. I wouldn't mind reviews of old stuff as long as it was readily available...
Very excited about tomorrow!

Ravengirl said...

New is good, but I truly believe that new is just a variation on things that have already been. So it is important to give careful consideration to "old" as well. So I would like to see reviews of old reliables!!!

Gabrielle said...

I love new and not so new. Some of the greatest tips I've received from friends are the items they've had forever and always use. I would love to read about some of The Scrap Source ladies newest finds and old faithfuls!

Thanks! :)

rozmom said...

I like the new but sometimes your just drawn back to an oldie but goodie.

Shannon said...

I would like to see a good mix of both the old and the new.

PattiM said...

I love to hear the in's and out's of new products and tools. But I also like to hear about some tools and products I already have to get new ideas. Love that scrapbooking manufacturers are bringing out their lines in material.

Emilie, Love what you do with the CC fabric!! Totall cuteness!! I am not going to lie and say that I don't love the latest and greatest but I look around my scraproom and think....maybe I should use up what I have. I still love my old stuff and I am still going to buy the new stuff!!

Gayle215 said...

I am primarily interested in the latest & greatest goodies, but wouldn't mind a mixture of new & old. I must have those fat quarters.

Shelley Haganman said...

Oops! I am totally losing my mind! I didn't mean to respond here Emilie! I thought I was still on the CC site when I commented!! I am so glad it's Friday because my brain is mush!! :)

EJoloya said...

I have both old and new in my stash and would love to hear about reviews about both. Basically, some of my old stuff hasn't been used because I gets it's been on so many layouts (eyelets for example) I had to put it in the back seat and have simply been set aside and forgotten - OK more like ignored. I've also shopped LSS garage sales and have purchased old stuff but just don't know how to incorporate it in my layouts and projects. I would love to see how the new is also used with the old.

Theresa said...

I like to get new products, but only if they are really going to work and be useful in the long-term. I am guilty of buying many things that end up just gathering dust, or that I foist off on someone else. Review of the new stuff would be greatly appreciated.

However, reviews of older things that I may not have purchased, particular because they are pricey (for example, I have not purchased a personal cutting system - haven't been able to decide between a Cricut, Sizzix, Cuttlebug, etc) because they cost a lot of money and may or may not meet my particular needs and style.

Soooo, reviews of anything will probably be useful for me. Even if it's something I already own, I might learn something new.

Momma Martin said...

I have a lot of old tools that I would like to see used in an old way. I don't have much money to spend and what I do I want to make sure I am buying quality items that will last a long time - not go out of style when the season changes.

Rebecca said...

I think I kind of like a good mix of both. Even though my budget doesnt allow me to spend a lot on new products I still like to see what is coming out, but I would like to see new ways to use old products as my wallet would appreciate that more than increased spending!
Thanks,
Rebecca K.

Jennifer said...

I think we scrappers will always use the new AND old, but the new high ticket items are what I hope for reviews on, like the cutters and the photo editing programs...however, paper trimmers and adhesives...those are old standards that we always need more ino about.

Amber C said...

Oooohhh....I would love some reviews of supplies/matierals that are old reliables! The latest and greatest are always nice, but sometimes getting back to basics is even better!

huskers said...

I would love to have both. I have been on a spending freeze because I need to use the "old" items that I have collected and the stash needs to diminish. I am always looking for new ways to use buttons, felt, flowers, etc. Please help me!

Christine said...

I think it would be nice to have reviews of the new and tips on how to use the new. I know when I watch scrapbook shows on tv, I always see things that you can do beyond the intended use of a product. For example, you can use your paper cutter to scor by putting the paper in as if you are going to cut at the scor point and then use a stylist to run down the middle instead of the blade.

Anonymous said...

hmmm i would like to see some reviews on die cut machines, like the cuddlebug and the newer top $$ ones.

I would have to say...most of the old reliable scrapbook companies have already proven themselves, that is why they are still around...unless they are reinventing the wheel and have come out with a new twist on their best selling product, Like these fat quarters from CC...I would totally make curtains with these because i love the patterns! I want to here about the new kids on the block and check them out before I buy the entire line...LOL

It would be nice to see how to use old and new together. I have tons of stuff old and new and it gets overwhelming on what to do with it.

I seem to be a collector of all scrap things and am always on the hunt for the latest and greatest, so I would like to see a combo of the two.

Miriam said...

I must say I love new things, however with the current economic times I'd love to read reviews on some of the older scrap items as they are now more affordable compared the newest and latest.

Thanks too for including us international gals :D

Jess said...

I prefer new things, but some oldies/goodies mixed in would be fine! I don't have tons, so I'll eat it all up!

Melanie Stanczyk said...

Lately I'm liking some old things once again. Like magic mesh...remember that stuff. I'm using it now.

Some old things are put away and they will stay that way.

I guess it just depends on what it is. I mean we all have "old" stuff, but we should really use it.

Don't get me wrong. I'm the first one to jump on all the new products from CHA every year!

Suz said...

I think both have a place.

Reviews of new products can give a scrapbooker real info & they can decide if it's something for them or just hype.

Reviews of older products can evoke some to roll their eyes thinking doesn't everyone already know that.... but really no everyone doesn't. I'm usually one that gets on the bandwagon later once the craze dies down a bit. That's when you hear if something really is good too after the frenzy dies down

Kathy L said...

I have product that is five years old that I still LOVE! It would be great to see what others have to say about the oldies-but-goodies.

Janette said...

Reviews of something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue (new papers lines!!) ... or green, or red or yellow or pink or purple. Doesn't really matter, just great to have a website that reviews anything and everything in the world of scrapping.

Karen D. said...

Hi Emilie!! I just saw that you started this site on Laura McCullouch's blog and had to come check it out. I am also a long-time member of Bad Girls so I got to see all your and Heidi's amazing work on there!!

Anyway...I love old and new things, so would love reviews on everything!!! Looking forward to some great things here!!

I agree that reviewing both old and new is the way to go. I know everyone is trying to save money these days and we might have forgotten just how wonderful some of our "stash" really is. Plus products move from new to old so fast, I have a hard time keeping up anyway.

Shanna said...

I think for tools, definately old AND new. For Adhesives,-old and new. For paper, only new for me. Things like ribbon-old and new. Ok, I guess a little bit of both!

Sue Bone said...

Woot an international drawing.

Not all of us have access to the latest and greatest so all reviews would be appreciated.

Wendy said...

I like both. I am always searching for the next big thing and enjoying seeing what the new color or product might be.

And I enjoy a review of the oldie but goodie tools and such.
I can't believe cosmo is making fabric TOO Cool!!!

Mary F said...

I think both are needed. We forget that while be may be an old hand at things and products-new people join this craft all the time and we'd be leaving them out-but everyone like new "toys" so new products are a must too!

Jessica said...

its always great to hear about new advancements and improvements to "old" products. i would like to see reviews comparing the old with the new so i can judge whether or not its worth the upgrade.

Diana said...

Really neat fabric! I was thinking about getting into quilting myself and using scrapbook paper patterns is really a neat shift.

As for reviews, I agree with a bit of old and new. New scrappers may start off with older tools that are not so costly and upgrade as they go along. So I would love to see comparsions and features of new products. Thanks for reading!

Susan W. said...

I love that fabric! As far as new and old, I would love to see how to use them both together. I think the incorporation of new and old would be a great thing.

I use a lot of both old and new products, but prefer to see reviews on the new stuff.

I also don't own mega tools (expensive cutters, that sort of thing) & only use very basic tools. I'm partial to embellishments that don't require too much labor like rub-ons. Reviews on very basic tools like adhesives (what's the best runner out there...I haven't found it yet!) would be greatly appreciated.

If the review is for something old and reliable but may be a bit difficult to find, a source list would also be apprecciated.
