Rubber Un-Mounted Journaling Stamps

Reported by Heidi Sonboul

.
Out with the old and in with the new seems to be the trend in scrapbooking. I can remember when rubber stamps were considered ultra cool. Then about 4 years ago a little piece of clear rubber was introduced as the “acrylic stamp” or also known as “clear stamps”. They became all the rage and many companies switched over to their easy use and easy to store style.

Many companies that still sell rubber stamps are coming up with new and innovative ways that allow you to store them better and provide a great quilt look. For this article I decided to focus on rubber journaling stamps made by two different companies that caught my eye. I will be reviewing favorites from Purple Onion Designs and Unity Stamp Company.

Purple Onion Designs
As I scrolled through the many choice of journaling stamps, I thought “These have such a fun unique style to them”. From shaped journaling tags, to vintage label sets and postage cards, I found myself delighted with all the fun and youthfulness of Purple Onion's style.

What I like:
- The stamps come unmounted for less bulky storage.
- The Purple Onion Site gives a clear demo on how to use them.
- Purple Onion has a very large variety of journaling stamp options to suit any style.

What I dislike:
- When it comes to large rubber stamps it can be hard to use them without a wood block.
- Most people don’t carry an acrylic block larger than 5X7 inches in size. However by taking a piece of sturdy cardboard, cut it down to the size I needed, and using double stick tape I was able to stamp without a problem.

What I made:

Where and how much:
Product: Antique Ledger Background
Manufacturer: Purple Onion
Cost: $9.00

Unity Stamp Company
Picking this company was a clear choice! This company has so many amazing new ideas about storing their product. They sell both mounted and unmounted stamps. What makes their mounted stamps so great is that they mount them on a thin piece of wood that will allow you to slide them into their main holder. For more information about their mounting system, you can see step by step photos on their site by clicking here. The site has a button to see a video tutorial, but when we clicked it the video had been removed.

What I like:
- Unity Stamps journaling stamps come in many great themes.
- Mounting system is thin and easy to use.
- Full instructions on use of their mounting system is available to view on their site.

What I dislike:
As for finding something I didn’t like… I honestly was 100% happy! I found that it stamps well, had a clean look and was a well made stamp. I think this is the reason I’ve been seeing so many magazines featuring these stamps.

What I made:

(With “The Details” stamp I was able to use this for a party invitation. Once it was stamped, I turned it into a tag to slide it in the front of the card. This is such a fun way to invite others to a party.)

I also found a 2nd journaling stamp that caught my eye. I just love these two little owls hanging out on a branch. Yes, this stamp is meant for journaling on cards and layout, but why not use it for a mini "mini" album cover. The journaling lines proved a place for the title and the date.

(Designer Tip: Use this for 3 different seasons. Spring, summer and fall will work if using different colors for the seasons.)

Where and how much:
Product: The Details Stamp
Manufacturer: Unity Stamp Company
Cost: $10.00

Product: Owl Journal Box
Manufacturer: Unity Stamp Company
Cost: $8.00
Link: http://www.unitystampco.com/stamps/1705-usk1973_owl_journal_box_who_are_you

So the next time you are looking for a fun new way to spunk up your journaling… don’t forget that a rubber stamp just might be the trick!

What do YOU think? Yes, I myself love clear stamps, because of their easy use…however without a doubt I’m still a big fan of my good o’l rubber stamps! How about you? Do you still use rubber stamps? Or have you moved completely over to clear stamps?

After you comment here...head on over to our Facebook Group to join the discussion and share tips on rubber vs. acrylic stamps.

I too rushed to the clear stamp bandwagon a few years ago but now I'm finding that rubber stamps give a more crisp image and have returned to my old favorites. Thanks for the reviews!

Yes, I agree. Clear stamps are easier to use for placement reasons. Rubber stamps are better for crispness. Enjoying your scrap review blog!!

I love clear but am sometimes disappointed in the selection....the cutest ones seem to be wood. I do love these for these for the ease of storage! These are awesome!

these are so cute. I love acrylics for the ease of use, but i agree with the other posters that rubber stamps leave a more crisp image.

I just heard of Unity and browsed their website over the weekend. Wanted to buy but wasn't sure, now with your review I think I might test some out. I love the ease of use of clear acrylic stamps and most of mine are that, but I still have many, many sets of rubber stamps. Storage is my main concern with buying more rubber stamps. Thanks for the great review!!!

I was drawn to clear stamps because of the ease of placement, but I've found that rubber stamps leave a better image. I've had problems with the ink beading up on my clear stamps- maybe I'm using the wrong kind of ink?

I find that even though I've bought a lot of acrylic stamps. I still prefer the old rubber stamps. They seem to have more detail. I'll need to go check out these two companies.

I like the clear stamps a lot more than the rubber stamps. I like to see what I'm doing!

I have a few wood-mounted stamps, but I always had such a hard time with placement. I love my clear stamps! This review of the journaling stamps is terrific!

I have a couple of old rubber stamps I still pull out, but generally am attracted to the acrylic ones. Currently, am looking for peace sign stamps, regardless of whether they are rubber wood mounted or acrylic.

I'm with many here...love the ease of placement with clear stamps and they don't take a lot of room, but rubber stamps leave very good impressions on paper.

I'm checking out these Unity stamps. BTW, I like that tip with using cardboard as a mounting block for a huge stamp.

charmi said...

I prefer clear acrylic stamps as i like to know where i'm stamping & what i'm doing but sometimes i find more unique & pretty looking stamps are the wooden mounted ones !!

Jenny said...

I was just introduced to your site! LOVE it! I haven't used stamps too much, but do have quite a few acrylic ones. I'm pretty disappointed in the crispness of the image. I think I'm going to have to go check out the sites you mentioned. I love the way these companies made the wood mounts easy to store!

Jess said...

I use both, but I mostly prefer rubber!! I LOVE UNITY!!

Tanis said...

I LOVE rubber. That owl journal stamp is on my list :)
I left rubber for awhile and went clear, but Unity brought me back. I just love the crisp images my Unity stamps give me every single time.
Fabulous projects Heidi....
I don't think I've seen this site before! I'm off to subscribe now :)

Toni K said...

I have some clear stamps, but I find that I love the deeply etched red rubber, especially Unity rubber!

Andrea said...

I love both actually. My Stampin' Up demo friend of course swears by rubber but I have seen acrylic in her collection as well. I definitely will check out Unity! I love that big journaling stamp!

Sammie said...

I have both rubber and acrylic, but prefer acrylic, except when it comes to larger stamps, because like you said, larger stamps are easier to use when they are wood-mounted.

Cynthia B. said...

A majority of the stamps I have are clear now...simply because of storage issues! I also like to see exactly where I'm placing the image on a project, so clear stamps allow me to do that. But - the images on wooden stamps are always nice and crisp, and I've just recently bought a few rubber ones (Cat's Life Press) because they were so darn cute. I'm intrigued by the Unity storage system - will have to give it a look - really like the owl journal stamp.
Thanks for the chance to win!

Thank you for sharing these companies with us. I use both acrylic and rubber stamps. But, I find that you get a crisper look with a rubber stamp.

Thanks,

I have to admit, I am not much of a stamper. As I see all these new stamps come out it makes me want to be one. I only have a few rubber stamps, but my acrylic stamps are slowly growing.

Gretchen said...

I prefer clear stamps because it makes placement easier but if the design only comes in rubber, I have no problem buying it. I use the Fiskars Stamp Press for most of my stamping and a small, clear block for smaller stamps. The Stamp Press works great with larger stamps too!

Etta said...

I use them both, though I don't have many of either type. But I LOVE these and would love to add them to my small collection!

I love clear stamps! I just love the fact that I can see exactly where I'm placing them and lining them up. They are very easy to clean and store too. Clear stamps rank higher than rubber stamps on my list. :)

I love UNITY stamps. I was all acrylic until I discovered their wonderful product. Now it's acrylic and Unity for me. They stamp like a dream, I only wish they were see thru, but I will take them any way I can!

Christi Snow said...

Great review Heidi! I love, Love, LOVE both of these companies so I think that they were both great choices and you ROCKED those stamps!! I love all of your projects on here, girly!! I am so lifting your idea for the little owls on the notebook....too cute! smiles...

I only have clear stamps as I am new to scrapbooking. I do love that little owl stamp. I might just have to go get me one!

Teresa Zuehls said...

Thanks for sharing how to use the large purple onion stamp. I have had it for a while now but couldn't use it because I didn't have a block large enough. I have used some of their other stamps and liked them. I use both rubber and clear stamps. To get a crisp image with clear stamps it does help to use an eraser to remove the slick coating. I have heard that you can also use a nail file but I am worried that I would ruin the stamp. I have had good luck using an eraser.

Kimberly said...

Great article. Okay, I guess I am "bassackwards!" lol My first stamps were the foam stamps. I have since donated most all of them. I have a few Junkitz foam mounted on acrylic. I did keep a few of the Heidi Swapp foam stamps as well. But I have been BITTEN by the rubber mounted stamps bug! I received a gift of the Purple Onion unmounted stamps a few years ago and because I simply was not stamping at the time I gave them to a fellow stamper/scrapbooker friend. Kicking myself now that you have shown using corrugated to mount them with double siding tape. Go figure! But I am daily learning more and more techniques about stamping and I am LOVING IT! I am simply SMITTEN about stamping!

I love all stamps ....rubber, acrylic, mounted, foam, unmounted, etc.! However there is just something about wood mounted rubber stamps. They give such a clear and crisp image! Love your site!

Fabulous projects! I really love how you used the journaling stamps. I just can't get enough of UNITY. I just love UNITY stamps and the people. They are so friendly and you can just feel the love. Ok I'm one of those stampers that still use rubber stamps. Thanks so much for a chance at a free stamp set.

love the review... i love both rubber and clear and traditional mounted rubber. THese journal blocks are just awesome!

Personally, I tried clear stamps and a lot of times my image comes out a little fat and blurry whereas with rubber stamps you get a crisper, sharper image. I've gone back to rubber stamps 100%. The only thing I miss is being able to see exactly where my image is going. And Unity stamps are AMAZING!! The quality is exceptional!! Love the stamps you chose!!

Kate Long said...

Currently it seems clear stamps are easier to find (in brick & mortar stores) - online my choice is rubber stamps all the way. Just what everyone else has said...crisper result. The Unity Stamps are fantastic!

Jewel said...

I started really getting into stamping after the clear stamps started coming out so don't have a ton of rubber stamps. I do think the rubber stamps have a crisper image and have starting using rubber stamps more often. I really like using them unmounted with my acrylic blocks - it is easier to place them. I love your projects you made - I am obsessed with journaling stamps right now!

Nicole said...

I at the moment have only been using Unity stamps. I do have TONS of other stamps both rubber and clear. Great review :)

Laura said...

I can honestly say that the only clear stamps I own are the dollar stamps from Michael's and I'm just not a bit fan. I prefer my good old rubba! I especially love my Unity!

nickandstaci said...

Still rockin' good old rubber stamps!

Deb Neerman said...

I've actually stopped purchasing clear stamps as I have had trouble with them crumbling apart on my stamp scrubber ... and I really hate the staining. Some of them have become so badly stained, that I can't even read them! And, as others have mentioned, the stamped image isn't nearly as crisp and clean as good ole red rubbah!
Nothing beats rubber stamps ... and placement is a piece of cake using a stamp positioner.
Thanks for the chance to win some great Unity stamps!

Jessica said...

I love rubber stamps the most, but will buy anything if I love the design. I always lean towards rubber stamps because they give a very nice impression, they last a very long time and they are really easy to use. Thanks for the chance to win. Great review!

I'm a stamping newbie but I have already come to appreciated all the pluses associated with rubber stamps. I read the comment above and realized I could use my Fiskar Stamp Press for the larger unmounted rubber stamps. Look at that-sources of new knowledge everywhere on this blog.

I invested in a lot of rubber stamps a few years ago and have really enjoyed them. But, I recently tried clear stamps and I must say that I LOVE them! It must be the OCD in me... because I love that I can see the exact placement on the page.

I have tried clear acrylic stamps, but always seem to go back to my trusty red rubber!! :) I don't mind if it takes up a little bit more room. I love Unity because they're slide stamps with the handles work awesome! Thanks for an awesome chance to win!

I agree with the other posters as well. I love how easy it is to see the clear stamps as far as placement goes but sometimes it is hard to get a clean , crisp image.

ParenteauFamily said...

I use both kids of stamps, the clear are easier to store, but the rubber sometimes come out better b/c they are stiffer.

KellyB said...

Awesome! LOVE Unity!

Kate said...

I use rubber stamps almost exclusively. I like the thicker, wooden back. I have also had trouble cleaning clear stamps sufficiently. However, I am impressed with the variety of clear stamps available...

meganklauerphotography said...

I love the idea of the clear stamps and how easy they are with placement, but the rubber stamps seem to stamp so much better using classic waterbased ink where the acrylic work best for me with either stazon or pigment inks. But, in the long run you just can't go wrong with a stamp and their versatility!

whoistracy said...

Great review! I {heart} Unity- their stamps just rock. I wish they were clear but the quality of the rubber is fabulous and their designs are to die for, so I can't complain.

Chelle said...

I've personally never tried Purple Onion however I love Unity. :)

At the end of the day, between clear / rubber... For me, its the design that draws me. :)

CrystalMN said...

I use both rubber stamps and clear stamps. I love both but find you do get a better stamped image from the red rubber like unity stamps makes.

Brianna said...

Very cute! I have both rubber and clear stamps! I am more concered with the design of the stamp and buy for that reason rather than if they are rubber or clear.

marisa said...

I recently started using stamps! I know..where was I? I think that the rubber leaves a better stamped image but I can't seem to store them easily like I can the clear. These stamps are the cutest! I would love to add them to my small collection!

I like both rubber and clear stamps. Rubber sometimes seem to stamp cleaner than clear when it comes to larger images. But I love the ease of placement with clear!

JennBinAK said...

Very cute stamps! I use both wood and clear stamps on my projects! Thanks for the reviews!

I have both rubber and acrylic stamps. I do use my rubbers stamps more than my acrylic stamps. What I don't love about my rubber stamps is the storage issues. I have thought about trying unmounted rubber stamps but wasn't sure how they would work. I will definately give them a try after reading your reviews.

Olde Country Creations said...

I have several clear stamps from different companies and I honestly just like rubber better. I know alot of people love clear but personally I cannot get as good of an image from them as I can rubber. I do love the fact they make placement so easy though.

Thanks,

PattiM said...

I started out with the clear stamps. $1's first, then moved up to Lilac Designs, Rachelle Anne Miller, Sarah Kay, ect. Then I started buying Magnolia, House Mouse, Whiff of Joy, Unity, etc. So, I guess you can say I started backwards. Clear to wood to unmounted and to wood again. Besides, I buy the stamp for the design you get from it not what you mount with or how you store it.

Oh super cute! Another great unmounted rubber stamp co, is Art Declassified. Absolutely FAB! Thanks for the review Heidi! YOU ROCK!

mustangkayla said...

I still stamp with rubber stamps. But to be honest lean toward acrylic so I can see where I'm stamping. But these journaling rubber stamps ROCK! I would definitely buy them.

Michelle (aka mybelle101) said...

I love them both...clear stamps are great for easy placement, but can be difficult to get a good impression (especially depending on the brand...there are major differences in quality out there!). I love the crisp look of rubber stamps, and with my trusty Stamp-a-ma-jig, I can place them just where I want them without worry. I love UM rubber, and even went so far a few years ago to un-mount ALL of my wood-mounted rubber...saved a TON of storage space!! :)

MammaA said...

I'm a cheap scrapper and if I find it on sale or at a bargain I tend to buy it. Overall I like the look of my wooden stamps more than my acrylic. I feel like I get a cleaner look with my wooden. Both of these stamps you reviewed look awesome and maybe I'll get out and buy them.

arlsmom aka Lynda said...

I am a stamp fan...rubber, clear...love them both. Each has different qualities...I love the fact that Unity allows you to use both with their handles!!!

jan farnworth said...

i use both clear and rubber for me its all in the design and what i can get my hands on. I find i have more rubber since i found unity but i have a ton of those little dollar acrylic sets to. So me i just love stamps.

Annie said...

I do find myself reaching for my acrylic stamps first, however, I do find that it takes a LOT longer to ink them up and you have to press a LOT harder to make the image as crisp as I would like. Good 'ol rubber stamps..take up a lot of room, but they are better, quality wise. However, you just can't beat the clear aspect of the acrylic.

julie.schellin said...

I use both. I have quite a few rubber stamps that I just love. But I also like the ease of placement I get from using clear stamps. I still buy both, and have no preference in design, just pick the images I like.

Steffanie S. said...

I still use both rubber and acrylic stamps. I love beeing able to see what I'm doing with the acrylics but the clean-up is faster with the rubber. What can I say---just love stamps!

I love both clear and traditional rubber stamps for different reasons, but am trying to move away from wood mounted rubber stamps as they are just too bulky and expensive although they are beautiful. I have been buying Unity Stamp Company's stamps and am very happy with how they can be used immediately right away!

I really enjoyed the review. I am interested in both companies and loved the tip about using cardboard with larger unmounted stamps. I have used that scrapbooking tape with unmounted stamps before which works wonderfully (is inexpensive and it holds and then also comes off easily from the blocks and is additionally not permanent)! I would also recommend when you use unmounted, uncushioned rubber (like clear stamps) to place some cushion like foam or a mouse pad UNDER the surface--usually cardstock/paper--being stamped.

Jill said...

Rookie here--so just a few of both. My rubber ones def. do a better job but acry is nice for storage. I LOVE the concept of 'recyclable' holders for stamps. All about the green. Haven't purchased Unity yet, but definitely on the 'soon' list just because of this concept.

Jingle said...

WOW! I really love that top one! I use mostly clear stamps, but I do love a good solid rubber stamp sometimes! I still buy them, too! It all depends on the designs!

I love acrylic stamps..I've never used unmounted rubber stamps. But hopefully I will order some soon. I love some that I've seen at Unity Stamps Co.

While I use clear stamps all the time I prefer the sharpness that rubber stamps. And being unmounted just means I can have more stamps in the same amount of space!!!

Thank you so much for this review today. I just bought some Unity Stamps and it's nice to see that they rate so highly! The acryllic ones I have purchased in the past are nice as far as the acryllic block, but I think the rubber ones are better in that the design is deep etched in the rubber. Tammy C

We actually debated clear/rubber stamps on one of my MB recently... and even though I started with rubber stamps, I too had jumped on the clear stamp bandwagon because of the ability to see where you stamp and their affordability. But just recently I dug up an old rubber stamp and was amazed at the details and quality of the picture... I guess I had forgotten about it! Now with the possibilities of buying unmounted rubber stamps you really can get the best of both world!
Thank you so much for this review!

I have to honestly say the only acrylic stamps that I have are ones that I have won. I have them, but haven't used them yet. I just bought a set of blocks to use them with.

I have tons of rubber stamps, but haven't been using them much lately except for my journaling stamps. I need to use my alphabets. So much cheaper than stickers or rub-ons for titles.

Thanks for showing how to mount a rubber stamp on cardboard. I have an unmounted rubber alpha set and was really unsure about how to use them!

Thank you for your reviews. I have not used stamps from either company, but you certainly gave me a reason to do so. I will be checking out this site for future references.

I love just about every kind of stamp out there. I can always find a place to use a new image. Clear, rubber, mounted, un-mounted - it really doesn't matter to me!! I must say, however, that I have a special fondness for Unity. They just have that certain something extra. Their Kit of the Month offers an eclectic and beautiful set of stamps, that really does have something for everyone!

I like my clear stamps, but I LOVE my rubber stamps. The impression is just so much better than the clear. MMMM, stamps. Purple Onions are the best!

I have mostly switched to clear stamps, but still treasure my collection of rubber stamps. Storing the clear stamps is so much easier, when they're in binders, too. Thanks for the honest review of Unity Stamps - I've been seeing them around a lot and it's great to get your take on them!

stephanie@{Olive Tree} said...

I love the clear stamps and use them primarily for storage-sake, but I do have a few of my favorite wooden ones that I have hung on to over the years. (Especially alphabet stamps.) Those will never go out of fashion. :)

I really only started buying stamps when clear stamps became so prevalent. I do have a couple rubber background stamps. My collection is probably pretty small compared to many. LOL

I LOVE my clear stamps because you can see EXACTLY where you want to stamp! However, some of the rubber stamps have thee cutest images which frustates me bec/I am sooo spoiled with my clear stamps, that I don't buy the rubber ones! However, I would be willing to go back to the other side to try these adorable new stamps! A girl can always change her mind, right?!

I LOVE these stamps you chose to highlight, especially the big ledger one! The majority of my most recent stamp purchases have been clear, but if I see a stamp I like, I buy it regardless if it's rubber or acrylic.

Deborah Mahnken said...

I love both kinds of stamps - and you've sold me on the cute owl one!!! I've got stamps from both Purple Onion & Unity and like both companies. And Cornish Heritage Farms has a great 6x6 block for those larger background stamps.

MrsETaylor said...

I'm a fan of both rubber and acrylics. I love the rubber stamps because you can get so much detail in an image. but the clear acrylics has such fun design elements.

Cyndi said...

I love the designs you created with the stamps from these companies. I love the clean look from the red rubber, however, I will purchase a stamp based on design and need. We had some 3/4" acrylic gathering dust in the workshop and cut some of it down to make stamping blocks that fit some of the larger stamps in my collection.

Patricia said...

I love clear stamps, I find them much easier to use and store. I don't have an acrylic block though, I use an old CD case! lol

MotherofJackals said...

My first love was red rubber/wood block stamps and as much fun as the clear ones are I will always have a soft spot for them.

My collection is about half and half. I think I would have to have the same stamp in both styles to really decide which I truly loved more.

I'm loving that Purple Onion Stamp a lot. I've always been a fan of BIG stamps because they are so much fun and so versatile. I think it would be fun to use it on fabric to make some funky curtains or throw pillows for a home office or scrap space.

I have both, but my clear stamps are starting to out-number my traditional wood mounted stamps. They certainly are easier to store! Thanks for the tip on the cardboard/double stick tape for large unmounted stamps!

Jodee said...

I usually use acrylic although I do have a couple of wood mount that I cannot do without! I like the look of these and would be willing to give them a try!

Chris S. said...

I use clear and rubber, however I find I get a better image with rubber. Unity has given me the best of both worlds - unmounted rubber that can be used on an acrylic block! That said, I am still hanging on to all my wood mounted rubber stamps!

Karen said...

I got rid of a lot of my rubber stamps a few years ago. Recently I've started using stamps a lot again. Most of my new purchases are clear stamps. Their quality has really improved from the first ones, but I'm still using the many, many rubber stamps I still have in my collection.

lockylady said...

I hadn't heard of these companys. I use both types of rubber as well but have used EZmount to adapt my volcanic rubber stamps to the acrylic blocks. I also have removed the rubber from my woodmounted stamos and used the EZmount to adapt them. So many beautiful stamps out there thta are available s wood mount only and I can't see through wood. I understand that there is a tool to line up your wood mounts but why bother if you can just convert them...saves on storage space too.

I like rubber stamps a lot more - cleaner images and easier to use. The clear ones often lose their "stick" soon after first use and even trying all the methods I haven't been able to get them to restick as nicely.

I love love love Unity stamps. They are by far the cutest and easiest stamps to use.

I have found that I use my rubber stamps more than my clear stamps. I think rubber stamps have a cleaner look & don't smudge as easily. I am especially fond of Stampin' Up!, Hero Arts, and Castlife Press rubber stamps.

Ashley said...

I still love rubber stamps.
Catslife Press rocks for rubber stamps!

I use both ... rubber & clear. The rubber give more detailed impression but I love being able to see exactly where my image will land with the clear stamps. Ultimately, I choose my stamp for the image, not type. Great tip on the cardboard & ds tape - will definitely use that next time I create.

I love all stamps - the clear stamps are easy to place but I really love some of my rubber stamps also - I have a few purple onion stamps I really love them. Great tip about the cardboard and doublestick tape.

I've gone almost totally acrylic. I still have one "Handmade By" and a Hero Arts owl wood stamp that I love but that's it. I really love being able to see where I'm stamping so I prefer acrylic. But I'm really really wanting to try Unity stamps.. I've heard some really awesome things about them :)

Rhayne said...

I use both rubber and acrylic. For detailed stamps I tend to look for rubber but I like being able to see exactly where I'm stamping with the acrylics. I'm off to check out the Unity mounting system :o) Sounds like it may be the perfect solution to old storage problem.

Thanks for the review!

I am not picky....I'll stamp with either one depending on my mood. I do however prefer that rubber stamps be un-mounted....just easier to store that way. I LOVE LOVE LOVE me some Purple Onion!! I havent tried the other company, but I'd love the chance, so pick me as the winner, LOL!!

Lainey said...

i have some acrylic stamps, but i rarely use them...really, the old fashioned rubber wood-mounted are my faves...but i've been a purple onion fan for a long time too! ;)

Tessa said...

I use a mix but think rubber stamps better! I especially LOVE Unity!

Tammy said...

I love both rubber and acrylic!! Unity is my favorite stamp company! Such cute designs and love that they are already cut!!!

Shirley Hall said...

I have lots of stamps--mostly acrylic. I love using them because I can see where I am stamping. The past Christmas, I used the cling-mount red rubber stamps by Tim Holtz for the first time. I loved them! They are actually as easy to use as the clear acrylic. Either clear or cling-mount, I prefer them over stamps mounted on wood. Storage is a big issue for me--I store my acrylic stamps in CD jewel cases to conserve space. Thanks for the review. I had not heard of either Unity or the Purple Onion previously. I visited both sites. The Purple Onion has some really nice projects on their blog.

I love rubber and only am recently getting used to polymer. I can't say that I am completely into polymer. What I can say is that I love Unity stamps. I'm a huge fan!!! In fact, that is how I found The Scrap Review. I found your blog through Unity (months ago) and then read your posts about The Scrap Review! Thanks!

I'm an acrylic stamp kind of girl. I have a few rubber stamps, but find myself reaching for the clear ones most of the time. Thanks for a chance to win!

I was new to stamping not long before the acrylic revolution so almost all my stamps are clear. I am impressed with the cardboard backing idea for rubber stamps and will definitely be pulling out the few I have, for another look.
Thanks so much - great review!

I'm on the clear acrylic team. I have a few old mounted stamps, but not with any designs I still like. But I really like the Purple Onion stamp...i could see myself using that a lot!

I have only used rubber stamps. Just bought a set of clear. Seeing the comments--I can't wait to try the clear stamps. I've also heard lots of great things about Unity Stamps!! Dina

I am totally stuck on clear stamps. I love being able to see what I am stamping

I bought a couple of stamps from Unity and was wowed by their quality and crisp images when I stamped. Just this week I joined their Kit of the Month club and am waiting for my 1st kit.

I only started using stamps when acrylics (via Close to My Heart) were created... so I have a few acrylic sets. Overall, I don't use stamps too much.

Kristin said...

I use both...I like them for different reasons but you just can't beat my clear stamp storage! Thanks for the chance at a giveaway!

Joli said...

I sold all of my wood block stamps on ebay, they took up way too much room. Acrylic is the only way to go; easier to store and much easier to use.

Patti said...

I must admit, that I have a lot more clear stamps vs the wood mounted ones.

The main reasoning being, is that I like to see what I am 'doing'. There have been times when I've had to 're ink' the image ~ the clear stamps are more forgiving in this regard..lol!

Erika M. said...

I do have many clear stamps; however, I am a big fan of some rubber stamp companies such as Gina K Designs, Unity Stamp Co, Cornish Heritage Farms, and Amuse Artstamps. I have both and love both.

I LOVE hybrid stamps ... rubber stamps that stick to acrylic blocks. Inque Boutique is a current fave. And Tim Holtz is doing acrylic/rubber hybrids too!! I wish more companies would go in that direction.

Cher said...

Hi...I love any stamps! and have a pretty even mix of all types. I just buy the ones I think will be best for my ideas. I think I worry more about my ink than my stamps these days. I am game to try any tho..cuz I love the art of it. Please enter me for a chance..I need to journal more! TYVM Cher

I just purchased some Unity Stamps and I love them! They have such cute details, thanks for doing a review on them.

It is funny but, I used to hate rubber stamps and now I am addicted and can't get enough of them. I do prefer acrylic stamps but, I am still buying wood mounted stamps!!

I've been using rubber stamps since 2001 and still prefer rubber to acrylic (which I use some but not as often). LOVE Unity and Purple Onion stamps!

sarahw said...

I really like rubber stamps, with that being said I like that I can see the placement with acrylic stamps. I just don't feel that the image is as crisp with acrylic.

Theresa said...

I have and use both clear and rubber stamps, but mostly clear - they are easy to store and you can see what you are stamping. I will admit that some brands have a tendency to bend down when you press the image and cause blurred edges - those usually end up not getting used again.

Thank you for this awesome review. I like that I can shop with more confidence when making these types of purchases - $9 or $10 doesn't sound like much, but stamps are like potato chips - you can't have just one!

Naomi said...

I love them both!! I love the storage ease of clear stamps, but it just nice to have the wood stamps....

Michelle said...

I like clear stamps better, but still use the rubber stamps that I bought years ago.
Those Owl stamps are way too stinkin' cute!

Katy said...

I only like to stamp with rubber stamps -- I just don't get a good image with clear stamps. I know that it's getting better if you buy from the right company, but I love my rubber so much, and Unity is top of the list!!

Rhiannon said...

I love both...it doesn't matter to me:) I would love to win!!!

I love the stamps! I use both rubber stamps and clear ones. I find my rubber stamps clean off better than my clear ones tho. I am having trouble using them enough lately, mostly because of inconvience. If I could find a way to have better access to them, I would definitely use them more.

Ashley said...

I love Unity! Red rubber is my favorite and I really don't feel like clear stamps give me a great image like red rubber can.

I use clear stamps mainly. I have been wanting to try the unity stamps for a while though. I've heard good things about them.

I don't have much experience with wooden stamps as I mostly have clear stamps. I like to see where I am stamping. But now I want to try the Purple Onion and Unity :)

I LOVE your creations!!! and yes - I love rubber stamps the best - wood mounted preferred but I have many that are not and I use them just as much!!!

I started off buying red rubber stamps from Stampin' Up!, which are about 80% of what I own. I ventured out into a couple of clear stamps, but never liked the quality much. Red rubber stamps seem much more detailed and clear, perhaps because the cut is deeper? I just ventured out to another red rubber stamp company: Unity Stamp Co. I received my first Unity stamps this week, and am already a big fan! I have a feeling that I will have to purchase their stamp holders, as I'm ordering more already. I love their stamp blocks (sliders)...can you say awesome? Thanks for a chance to win stamps, and I will frequent your stamp reviews regularly!

jill said...

I like rubber stamps because there is A LOT more variety. I like these journaling stamps you demonstrated, I never think about stamping journaling blocks and think those are a super cute way. Personally the stamps I use most are foam letter stamps. It is becoming old-school I guess, but they are super easy to use, store, and place every single time.

falwyn said...

In all honesty, I don't do that much stamping - except digitally! Ha! But I do love me some classic stamps that I can use over and over again. And I've been craving some nice basic journaling lines - drawing my own just isn't the same. I love the look of that Purple Onion one!

JennV said...

I am a huge fan of stamps! I never wanted to get into rubber stamping because my mom did when I was a teenager and she always had way too much that she never used, and they just took up space. When I started scrapbooking a couple of years ago I fell in love with clear stamps. My favorites that I use all the time are flourishes and my letter stamps. I also have a few journaling stamps that I have used several times. These unmounted stamps seem great to me, especailly for their easy storage. I honestly haven't really heard much of these unmounted stamps yet, so thanks for the review!

Lynette C said...

I love stamps. I do have more clear stamps than rubber stamps. I love both. Clear makes it easier to know where to stamp but the rubber stamp give a more crisp image. Does any one agreed with me that gernerally clear stamp is cheaper than rubber stamp?

Mary F said...

When acrilics came out I was in love with the idea--BUT some of the stmaps I've found don't stamp as well as a traditional wooden stamp-But I still love the concept-maybe I'm just not doing it right! there is alot of into to get for wood mounted but not much on clear--both of these companies I am going to have to check out though!! You enablers You!!!

Mary Friederichsen said...

I use both as many do. I love my Unity stamps because they leave such a clear image! I do like the image better from a rubber stamp, but sometimes buying the clear stamps in the sets that companies offer is more cost effective, and for certain things it is nice to be able to see thru to your project. I have started using the rubber cling mounted and those give the nice clear image of the wood mounted rubber stamp, but are much easier to store, take up less room and I have started to switch them to those new thin storage boxes that stampendous just came out with.
Thanks for the opportunity to win blog candy and I enjoyed your reveiw as well!

I used to be an Acrylic only stamper until I found Unity. I love everything about their stamps and their mounting system is so easy to use! Now, whenever I'm stamping, I can't help but to pull out that big box of rubber that I have built up from Unity stamps.

Im in australia so dont know if im eliglible, but wanted to put my 2 cents in anyway. I love stamps - maybe cause im just new to it all but how could any one get tired of them esp the ones you have just shown, im hunting down aussie distributers as soon as i write this! Fabulous!

L said...

I prefer the detailed images of rubber stamps. That;s something you can't get with acrylic. Plus, acrylic stamps tend to smudge a bit if you press too hard because the plastic is so soft. However, I do appreciate the cost of acrylic stamps!

Kelly Mills said...

Clear for sure! my rubber stamps (on the wooden blocks)... I've carefully pulled them off the wooden blocks, and us them with clear blocks, this way I can see exactly where I'm stamping. I agree the rubber stamp detail is very good compared to some clear stamps. That being said... I simply love stamps. In many ways they are pieces of art and have several of both types

Susan said...

I like stamps and have used Purple Onion before. I like the clear since they are a bit easier to position. They are like pieces of art and you can do so much with them.

I use both clear and rubber stamps. I like the clear for seeing what I am doing! I don't stamp too often, but after reading the reviews, I think I will be checking these sites out. The owls are teally cute!

Robin W. said...

I have both, but seem to use my acrylic more. I like to see where I'm stamping especially for words. I like the rubber stamps when I just need the one design down and don't need to add to it. I also think that the manufacturer plays a big part on which type gives a crisper image. I loved your review; I had just been looking at the purple onion site.

Mandy said...

I use both. I do like the clear ones because you can see where your stamping. I don't like rubber or clear better then the other if I like the image then that the stamp I want no matter what its made of.

Boy I do like the clear stamps but they have a tendancy to get old and sticky sometimes...so quality brands are a must. I appreciate the info on two new companies I have not tried.
And I do like unmounted rubber stamps as well, but as you say the large ones are a problem cuz finding a big acrylic block is not the easiest do. I have a mix and some of my stamps are still on wood blocks as well.
Loved the article, helpful and informative.
