Zutter Bind-It-All - Pt.1

{reported by Shelley Haganman}

Today I am reporting on a little gadget called the Bind-it-all by Zutter. This machine is an all-in-one personal punching and binding center! What does that mean to YOU the scrapbooker/project maker you ask? Well it means you now have the power to make an album/project out of anything you want right on your scrapdesk!

I was immediately intrigued with the BIA when it surfaced at CHA in 2007. I had always wanted to make my own albums and fill them with different items while having it look professionally done! Having said that, let's take at look at the Bind-it-all shall we?

Ease of Use - First I would like to talk about the ease of use with this baby! The BIA is very compact weighing only about 3 pounds! This comes in handy as it is a great item to take to a crop or a class. It is very solid in it's construction and has a pull out foot that gives you even more stabilization while punching and binding! I love the fact that you can bind almost anything. I am talking chipboard, canvas, cds, fabric, thin acrylic, thin wood, tags, photos, vinyl records, just to name a few! (a list of items and their recommended thickness is posted on their website). The possibilities are just endless.

Versatility - Zutter sells the O-wires needed to bind your project in many sizes and colors! They also sell chipboard, acrylic, clipboard wood, and canvas board to create an album. To top it all off Zutter offers complete instructions (written and DVD) with each binding machine and you have access to their wonderful and very educational website and newsletter.

Support - Zutter also offers a sister website called Zutter Zisters where you can find a site packed full of inspiration/tips and tricks from their very talented design team. You are encouraged to send in your creations for sharing online too! For the price tag, I think it is a wise investment for a someone who loves to have the freedom of creating your own albums/projects in professional looking manner in the comfort of your scrap space for a fraction of the cost that it would require at a binding center

What I liked:
- The versatility of this little machine (total creative freedom!).
- I love to mix and match my media and you can with this machine
- The compactness of it (easy to take to crops and storage issues)
- It's affordable!

What I didn't like:
- Does not accommodate wider items (canvas, several layers of chipboard/paper) **this problem was solved in the new Bind-it-all 2.0 Pink version with 33% greater width accommodations.
- I had trouble getting exact punching length **again problem solved with the new Bind-it-all 2.0 Pink version and its new extension bar that helps you cut up to 12.5 inches accurately.
- I wish you could get a combination of O wires for binding instead of having to buy all one size!

What I made: I made the following projects with my Zutter Bind-It-All...

  • Favorite Photos Album: This is a multi media album I made to house some of my favorite photos. The Bind-it-all worked great on the canvas board and was like butter on the Grungeboard! I also used a clear plastic sheet as a page and just wrote on the plastic.

Supplies: 5x7 canvas boards, Tim Holtz's Grungeboard, Ranger Distress ink, Transfer Magic Inkjet transfer paper, chipboard, plastic sheet, Autumn Leaves clear buttons, 7 Gypsies stickers, Martha Stewart journal stickers, DMC floss, black Slick writer, old sheet music, old bingo games sheets, Jenni Bowlin chipboard buttons, Bind-it-all O-wires.

  • Baseball Card Album: This is a quick and easy way to make an album out of wallet-sized photos!! The Bind-it-all allowed me to make the perfect punches to bind these card protectors and make them into an album!

Supplies: baseball card protectors, wallet sized photos, O-wire from Bind-it-all.

Where and How Much:

Product name: Bind-it-all
Manufacturer: Zutter
MRSP: $69.95 (price for new Pink 2.0 version) $55.99 (price for the blue original version)
Available at: Scrapbook.com, binditall.com, and *Amazon.com (* indicates cheapest price available at time or article)

I own the original Bind-it-all (blue) and I love it. I have used it on many albums and have had fun creating many unique projects. This is a great item for the person who is strictly going to use it on paper and chipboard. Recently, I have purchased the Pink 2.0 version as I have moved more towards using non-traditional items to bind such as canvas board and board games. Can I just say that I am in LOVE! Either one of these Bind-it-all machines would be a sweet addition to any scrap room!!

What the team thinks:

Heidi - I use it for all my mini albums! It's easy to take to crops and I love that it's two tools in one!

Noel -
This is one of the best all around scrapbooking & daily life tools I have. I've used it for gifts, school projects, mini albums, address books, and more!

Emilie -
I adore this little gadget. I do feel it is just a bit too light-weight. I can't make it sturdy enough for my liking even with the arm support. That has nothing to do with the quality of the construction...just a personal opinion. But is that a deal-breaker....NO WAY!

Layle - Great little tool, so handy to have around for making my own mini books.

What do YOU think? Do you own a Bind-it-all? What do you use your BIA to create? Do you think it is a scrapbooking staple? Let us know! We want to hear from you!

I don't own a bind-it-all, but I've often thought about buying one. My biggest concern is 'is the novelty going to wear off?' I do love the examples though, and all of the other examples of bits I see done with this tool

Jaime said...

No I don't have one, but that little football album is so cute. I may have to get one. I have two boys in which I am sure I will have plenty of sports albums

Kimberly said...

I totally dig my BIA! I use it for making little books and I love the tiny square punches and have been known to create edges with it on my patterned paper for that added touch!

Rebecca W said...

I don't have a bind it all but I am thinking of getting one. I do have projects that I use rings for now that would be easier with the bind it all. I also love the things I have seen you can do on a regular scrapbook page using the bind it all.

I do not have a Bind it All but I sure wish I did! I think it would be a great investment and well worth it in the end. Thanks for doing this review and this giveaway!

Thanks so much for this review - I have been considering purcahsing the Bind-it-all since it first came out, but just wasn't sure if I wanted to invest that much money in something that a) might not work, and b) I might not get much use out of. You have convinced me that this will be perfect for my needs - I LOVE to make mini-books so this is the item for me!

Love your examples - lots of inspiration for when I get my own Bind-it-all!

I don't own one sadly - but I would love too! Pick me pick me! Thanks for the great review too.

I love my Bind It All. It's even great for binding paperback textbooks so that they'll lie flat on the desk while you are in class. It makes them so much easier to write in or underline. Amy

I haven't made this investment, yet. But, since I've been going "small" lately & creating notebooks and journals that fit in a purse or backpack, this little gem has moved to the top of my "must have" list. Thanks for the review!

I love love LOVE my Zutter! I want the pink one SO bad but have the blue, and can't justify a pink one just yet. It has paid for itself already with the gift albums that I've made, in just a year! LOVE it! :)

And would love to win the pink one! ;)

Thanks for all the info and the great review! I don't own a bind-it-all, but after finally trying my hand at mini albums, I think I need one! Love the mini album! So cute! Thanks for the chance to win!

Carly said...

Great review! I would LOVE a bind it all! I was checking them out at the recent Scrapbook Expo and one of the booths that were selling them told me the blue & the pink were EXACTLY the same the only difference was the color-that the pink was the new color and that's why they were selling the blue cheaper. I had a hard time believing they were exactly the same but different prices. I wasn't able to buy one anyways at that time. But, am so glad to come to your site and learn the TRUE FACTS of products. Thank you!

I have been wanting to get one of these for a long time, but had been reluctant. Love the review and I think it convinced me once and for all that this would be a great addition!

lizacreates said...

Thanks for the review. I saw this a long time ago and was on the fence about it. Didn't think I would be using it enough to justify the price tag. However, lately I'm considering making mini albums for a change from my usual 12x12s. This now sounds the kind of tool I'll be using a lot. Thanks again.

I have been eyeing this BIA for a long time. Then they came out with the pink one, and I've been admiring both! I'd REALLY love to have one. I've been making mini-albums and this would be great to have!! thanks for the chance! ~Heidi scrapnmklady - at - yahoo - dot - com.

Oh my!! I am super excited for a chance to win one of these!! I have nothing like it in my scrappy stash, and it would be the PERFECT addition in there. If I don't win this one, I am "bound" to get one anyhow....LOL....get it, bound? Oh well, I tried. :o)

I took a class using this and the very next LSS 40% coupon made the decision for me. So far have only gifted (the class project is MINE) but am getting tons of new ideas recently (just found your blog Shelley and the Zisters) There is just no end to the possibilities. This is not a 'fluff' expense girls--it's a basic! (But I would kill for pink :)

Rhayne said...

Great review! I just got the Bind-It-All v2 for Christmas and have yet to create an album with it. I've used it to punch holes, make faux notebook paper edges but no albums. The rings are hard to find in my area and I don't order online very often. Eventually, I'll suck it up and just order them but it took me a year of really, really wanting one before I got one and even then I didn't buy it :o) I tend to be sure I can't live without something before buying it.

Deanne said...

This would love this it would be so cool to be able to make books out of anything!! Wow thanks for reviewing and for the giveaway....

Andrea said...

I found this review extremely helpful b/c I have been wondering if I should buy one from my LSS. I am amazed by the possibilities the BIA offers! This sure beats buying mini albums. This allows you more creative freedom! I really want one now and definitely want the pink one!!!!

ms.cheryl said...

I have a blue one but have only used it once. I got my holes off a little. It's intimidating to me.I could benefit from a hands on class where I would have to repeat uses over and over. I would love a pink one. I plan to take a class at GASC in June. Thanks, ms.cheryl

I don't own the BIA,It is on my wish list. I have used it at stamp camp and loved it.

I don't have one. I would love to win one! Last year for Christmas I was wanting to create a calendar by digitally editing photos to have one month on each picture. Then printing them (in 4x6 size) and using the bind-it-all to create a sprial calendar. Hope that makes sense!

Holly said...

Totally agree with your review. My BIA is my most favorite tool. I actually just made use of it to combine my cricut cartridge books into larger sets. I removed all the unnecessary pages (german, french, sample project, etc), added dividers, and bound them into groups of 3. Much easier to drag around 4 large books than 12 small books!!

I don't know anybody who has the pink one ... my friends and I all have the blue one. Can you give more details on exactly what the differences are, and if it is worth it to upgrade?

This is one of my dream products for my scraproom. I love it and your review just reinforced all I was hoping the product would be. I love making small books and have been just using staples or loose leaf rings which really limits what I can make.

I have been wanting one of these for a long time now, but thought, "I just don't know if it is really worth the price". Even with all of the positive comments on other sites I was a little bit weary, as I heard a few negative thoughts also. But as more time goes on, it seems to get better and better reviews with less and less negative views. That has to be worth something. I do wish this one was the pink machine, but if I did win, this could be my tester/starter machine. I can find out for myself if I really want to invest the large amount of cash it would take to get the pink one and all of the supplies.

I don't have a Bind-it-all but oh I would love to!
I like the idea of creating an album from scratch!

I think the bind-it-all is a great machine! We have one at the lss where I work, and we have used it many times. The one thing I would recommend is practicing on some scrap papers the first time you use it so you can get the hang of it. This way, you won't run the risk of ruining your project you have worked so hard on.

I have been intrigued by this tool - I hope to have one some day after reading the review. Great projects too!

I've been looking at the BIA for a few months but needed this review to really push. Thanks for the great review!

Love the multi-media mini album. I have been wanting a bind-it-all for a long time. Maybe it's a good thing I waited for version 2.0. Thanks for the write-up!

I have a BIA (the original) and mainly use it for mini albums as I have problems at time with the line-up (I"m sure user error) but I have also used it for creating holes for stitched box albums and such. (I loved your fave photo album btw..)

I don't own one, but it looks really fun!

I have a friend whom has one and she loves it. It looked so easy to use when she showed me. I am an avid mini maker so know that one of these would get good use!! Excellent review...good to see others using it and loving it as much as my friend does!!

I don't own a BIA, but I think they would be really cool to have. I'd love to make my own albums and other neat projects.

Kim M said...

I received one for my birthday but haven't used it yet. The one project I was going to use it for was too thick and I haven't done any other projects since.

Virginia said...

I use the one at my LSS a lot and really like it, but have refrained from buying one because I wanted the newer pink one to accomodate wider widths- that was my only complaint that it took FOREVER to bind a thick project...

Rebecca said...

I don't have one yet, but I always slow down when I pass them in a store. I have been very curious about them and now that I know more, would love to own one!

I do not own one YET! It has been on my wishlist since the blue one came out! I really want the pink one due to the new features, and I keep praying that one day it will show up in my mailbox! I love to make my own albums and currently just use binder rings because im not able to get this yet! But My Birthday Is Coming!!!

I have the older version of the bind-it-all and absolutely love it! I would love to get the new and improved version but I can be happy with what I have.

I don't have a BIA, but I always drool over it when I see it...good to know it's a worthwise purchase.

I am so glad that I read the review today, I have been thinking about buying the BIA for a while but did not because I was unsure! Thanks to this review I will be getting one - if I don't win it first:) Love this site so very much!!!

I am so drooling over the BIA....I had never understood how it worked or why I needed one, but I have seen MANY a project where I have decided that I *need* this tool!!!

See, I love these reviews. I have heard of a BIA, but have never seen one or heard that much about one! Now I have a great deal more knowledge and could see the benefits of such a tool! If I scrapbooked more, I could see how it would be a staple, but for a card marker like me, it's probably not an essential!

Joli said...

I am not much of a mini-maker, but that idea of using the baseball card protectors is super cute. That would be a great way for family members to store pics of the kids.
I love your reivews, but the ideas you give are just as valuable!

LOVE my little blue BIA, but also noticed some of the issues with it that you pointed out. Sounds like the pink one takes care of them, which is good to hear! I make little mini albums and will be using it this weekend to bind my son's school project (scrapbook of a NC county). I see it being helpful for school projects and scrapbook minis for years to come!

Krista said...

I think it's a genius tool! But, alas i don't have one! I would love one...but i am saving for a wedding so it's not within my scrapping budget...i do love mini-albums though so this would be an awesome tool for me! One day...maybe i can put it on my registry for the wedding...;)!

heather (h2) said...

I have "eyed" the tool from afar...but after reading your review soooo willing to take the plunge;) thanks

Jenny said...

I've always wanted the pink BIA!!!! I love it!

mbmary said...

I have the blue BIA and have found so many uses for it-more than I ever thought I would-I do like the thought that I can do even MORE with the pink version thought--with the blue I have done everything from a wedding albumn to address books to notepads from my scraps. A total MUST HAVE!!

laverneboese said...

I own the blue BIA and would love the pink one, for all of the reasons stated in your review. I use mine to make sketch books for my boys :)

Courtney ;-) said...

I have owned the bind it all for a while now and I have to admit that I rarely use it, but your post has inspired me to head up to my scrap room right now and use it!!! :)

Karen said...

I do not own the BIA but have used it at Archivers. I used to think it was pointless for me since I don't usually make mini books; but, I am discovering more and more possibilities for it. I rather want it now :)

Carol Ann said...

I would love to get a bind it all to make projects with my daughter!

JennV said...

I am not very educated on the bind it all, although it sounds like an awesome tool! (And I love tools!) One question: can it bind 12x12 paper? The main drawback for me is that I don't make mini-albums so I don't think this would be a useful tool for me!

Anonymous said...

I had wanted one for quite some time but wanted to be able to purchase the O-wires locally! Well I finally found a LSS that sells then so I got myself a BIA! I made autograph books for my kids for our trip to Disney! I am going to turn them into scrapbooks of our trip for each of the kids! I would love to get my hands on the new version though. I made my covers our of chipboard and by the time I covered them, they were too wide for the blue BIA! A bit frustrating, but I starter over with thinner chipboard and they turned out great!

Oh...how I would LOVE to have one of these! I would bind anything and everyting! The only time I get to bind anything is when I volunteer at the kids school, I had so much fun the first time I used there binding machine.

Thanks for the great reviews!

I absolutely love my bind-it-all. I have the original and it suits me just fine. Most projects will fit with ease. Very easy to use. I would suggest it to all scrappers who like to create mini albums!

Thanks for the contest.

I am still quite new to scrapbooking and I've never made a mini album or anything like it. Owning a Bind it all would sure be inspiration to try this version of scrapping!

This has been on my wish list for some time! Thanks for the review, now I know to go for the pink rather than the blue. Of course I wouldn't have to worry about it if I won it!! *wink, wink*

Don't pick me as I have the pink and the blue already! I consider them essential and use to for binding everything!! I'm a bind-a-holic!!!
Love the product and their web-site is terrific as well.

I attended a class at my LSS last year and we used the Bind It All to make a booklet out of cardstock and ever since have it on my wish list. A great tool for those who love making mini books, which I do. I had some help using it at the class but your review makes it sound so easy I am sure I could do it myself.

I have a BIA and I also love it! I do not use it as much as I should but just recently, I started using it to make little books for the kids to play with and they love to help!

I have had the chance to try the Bind-It-All before and was impressed! It punches through thick cardstock very easily and binding your creations is a piece of cake. I am very curious about the 2.0 version now!

TFS!

I own one and love it! You did however forget the best thing about the BIA v.1...it's color! It's so hard to find aqua anything out there! LOL! (Color was a big influence on me wanting the Slice, too! LOL!)

I JUST bought the pink version and haven't even gotten it out of the box yet ( I JUST got it, though). You can bet it will be out of the box tomorrow! Yay!! So excited to use this now!!!

I recently purchased the pink BIA and love the ability to make notebooks, recipe books and little photo albums. I'm not too sure that it fits as a scrapbooking staple but for 3D projects it is a must. Lovin' it...

I'm so glad I read this review. Now, not only do I have more confidence that the system is "worth it" (I've seen mixed reviews), I also know NOT to get the blue one, and head straight for the pink. Too bad: blue is my favorite color; pink is my least favorite.

Love your review and your samples. I have one and have used it to make calendars as gifts. I haven't used it yet for a mini scrapbook or anything, but it's nice to know I have it there "just in case".
