Adhesive Round-Up

There are a lot of adhesives out there.
So many, it would take months to review them all one-by-one.

But today we'll give you a quick glimpse at the adhesives that some of our team members adore and the ones that failed the test.

My favorite glue runner is the inexpensive AdTech ones from Wal-Mart - can't beat the price, and they work just as good as the expensive ones.

My favorite all-purpose adhesive is "Glossy Accents" by Ranger - I discovered the great adhesive properties of this stuff by accident, and now use it all the time. A bottle of that stuff goes a long way.

I also like Pop-Dots in all sizes and thicknesses - the ones on a roll can be a bit awkward to work with, so recommend the singles.

For tiny things, I like the QuickieGlue Pinpoint Roller from Sakura.

And a good ole glue stick will work wondered in a pinch - I like the Scotch Permanent Glue Stick - I buy them in big packages from BJ's.

I am a super basic person. I use glue sticks and Scotch double sided tape (the permanent... NOT the repositional - it is not worth the money) for most things. Anything that can be held with the tape or glue sticks, I use either pop dots, glue dots or if needed - Tombow Aqua or Mono - whichever I have on hand.

I use double side tape for a lot of my scrapbooking.

I use pop dots for 3D effects. I get extra use out of it by cutting up the areas between the dots and using those as well- especially if I need a larger area poped.

For small things I use xyron adhesive runner- I have the 210.

I like zip dry or beacon 3 in 1 for things that need a stronger hold.

I use glue dots for a lot- sometimes making my own and sometimes using those by glue dots.

Fabulous information! I love Glue Dots and have to say that I was disappointed with the new ones in the dispenser (Dot n Go)- it wastes alot of Glue Dots and just doesn't work well. I also like the sheets by Scrapbook Adhesives because you can use them in your die cut machine and make you die cuts sticky.

I have used glue sticks for paper to chipboard for BIA books--cheap for big areas. It DOES NOT LAST, but don't know a better option for this purpose. Thoughts? Other than that and vellum attempts, I don't have a long NO list and most things I've tried work fine. Glue dots for extra strength, "dotty" runners, zig or xyron for small cuts. I am really anal retentive enough to prefer scrap adhesives click and stick squares for exactness on edges of card (things that will be handled). I am loosening up on exactness on layouts because I normally put in protectors.

I do have a question--sorry about the repeat post. Iave heard of a sheet of adhesive you put letters on and press. . .adhesive adheres then lift off to put on LO. Kind of an alternate to xyron. Does anyone know brand and/or how this works? Does the adhesive "string out" around the letters like xyron? I am kind of "over" xyron because of this extra work of fixing the stringiness. Thanks for any help/hints.

Fabri-tac is the greatest invention ever-I have put away my hot glue gun. I also have the glue-glider pro and just love it. Don't like-too numerous to mention-but some of them I am sure failed due to the user.
I have used the Dry Bond Adhesive sheets (QVC)-they actually work quite well.

I also do not like ribbon glue by MM or the 2-way from Zig. Yuck.
I use Scrapbooker Glue by Scotch Brand the most. Easy to use, gets the job done. I don't need a ton of other glues getting in my way. And it last longer than a tape runner.

Lol...I think I collect adhesive. I used to mainly use double stick tape. But recently won a Glue Glider Pro and really like it. Still use tape once in a while though.

I love glue dots for buttons, ribbons and flowers.

For board books and mini albums I love my Tombo.

I have a zig pen for small pieces. Also have a Xyron (which I don't use often as I feel its expensive). Pop dots (not sure what brand, but whatever I can find when I need them).

I don't like glue sticks although I have a friend who thats her primary glue and she loves it. I feel like it doesn't stick well.

I use my ATG gun for almost everything. I love Glue Dots, Zip Dry for Paper, Glossy accents and the Quicky Glue Pen. I also like my Xyron (especially the 'X').

I don't like glue sticks (except for when I'm teaching kids classes).

amazing how many adhesives are out there!

I use 3 with just about every project! duck runner for paper/pictures/thin items....glue dots for flowers/metals/heavier items....helmar 450 adhesive for chipboard/small pieces that need a good stick! they all are durable and have proven to hold up in my albums!!!

I love my ATG gun. I use it for everything. Then for crops I take my Glue glider pro. Another adhesive I love is the Fiskars tape runner. It really has a good hold. If I'm paper piecing then the zig two way pen. For chipboard I use a good hold glue stick.

I use four types of adhesives, pretty much exlusively:

For paper, photos, regular type stuff, Tombow's Mono Adhesvie diamond dots. It holds very well, and I can reposition things as long as I haven't pressed it down firmly. And it's SO easy to refill. (this one: http://store.scrapbook.com/jv-62145.html)

For ribbon, metal, chipboard, and other miscellaneous items, I use either glue dots or terrifically tacky tape (the red-backed double-sided tape). A warning: the tacky tape is VERY sticky; once it's down, it's probably not coming up.

For die cuts and other small pieces, I love my Xyron. I have a 150 and a 510, depending on the size of the letters. They are fabulous!

Oh, and for Jill, who doesn't know what to use with her chipboard books and paper ... The Xyron Cheetah works pretty well. Just be sure to use it on your paper; it will pull up the top layer of chipboard if you use it directly on the chipboard. Mod Podge works well too, but it's messy.

I use scotch double sided tape for most things, especially photos. I can't use tape runners because they give me the shivers.

I use diamond glaze for things like buttons, metal, hard to glue things.

I use glue stick or double sided tape for ribbon, everything else bleeds through!

For flowers I use scotch liquid glue and for small die cuts I use Zig glue pen.

I have an ATG that I use for most things. I also use the AdTech glue runners for Walmart..super cheap and take up less space in my bag when I go to crops. I love both the Zig Glue pen and Precision glue pen from CM for tiny stuff. I had a really bad experience with Mono Adhesive from Tombo one and won't use it again for fear of a repeat catstrophe. Lets just say 60 ruined Christmas card on December 19th. I like foam pop dots for my 3-D stuff.

You know, this is timely for me as I have been wondering about various adhesives lately. I too hated the mm ribbon glue and was soooo disappointed when it bled through my pretty velvet ribbon. I have been stuck for glue that holds ribbon and I see lots of ideas from everyone's posts. Dots only seem to work if the end is tucked under the paper overlay, otherwise, the ribbon seems heavy and eventually falls off. I only JUST discovered double-sided tape (meaning I finally bought some!) and love it, but it's too wide for some things. I will have to take note off ppl's faves and see what I can find that fits!
BTW, anyone know how to refill the snail adhesive holder from SU!? I have a refill and am afraid of breaking the holder to get the old one out!
Thx!

I use Zip Dry Glue for just about everything! I LOVE it!!! :)

I use the ATG on everything. Some stuff this doesn't work on, like certain chipboards. Glossy accents works good as a glue too. I also use zip dry and zots adhesive dots.

I have been eyeing an ATG gun but just can't bite on that price--maybe for Mother's Day.

I think I am the lone dissenter when it comes to glue dots--they were awful for me. I use Zots and just love them.

Luckily there are lots of adhesive choices; seems we can all find a combination that works for us! Great article!

To answer bumblesnbees, to refill SU adhesive, simply throw away the half that contains the old roll of adhesive and snap in the new half. The directions are on the back of your refill.

I am probably the odd one because I use a glue stick a LOT! And I never have any problems with things coming unglued. I also use a lot of Snail and glue dots by Stampin Up. Tombow for some things. Narrow ribbon - glue lines. I have a stash of this and don't even know if they still make it. Good topic!

MaryF said...

Up untill recently I used the tombow-but at the last convention I got the glue glider--LOVE it! I love that depending on the cartridge I have 40-65 ft of adhesive so that I'm not constantly changing the cartridge when I'm in the mode and jammin out pages. Just spent the whole weekendd at a retreat-did 20 pages and used just 2 1/3 cartridges! LOVED THAT!!!

I want to get a ATG gun but it looks like it would be uncomfortable to use after awhile!

Lynette said...

The ATG gets easier to use with time. I use Scotch Quick Dry Adhesive ( I think I am the only person who does). Glue Dots and the Xyron 150.

marla said...

My favorite adhesive is my ATG gun. I love and it works so wonderful. I love glue dots for flowers and other dimensional items. I also love Pop dots for cards to pop things off the page!!

Vicki Morris said...

I just got the smaller atg gun with 24 rolls of refills and am in love. I am going to have adhesive for along time. One thing I hate is having to continually buy refills. The xyron 150 is another favorite as well as memory book glue dots (just did not like their mini dot n go runners. Ended up having to pull the glue dots off, defeated the purpose of buying the runner. Thanks for all the likes and dislikes. Helps alot.

I love Scotch Quick dry adhesive for almost everything. I do use Zip Dry for certain things, but would love to know how people keep it from drying up in the tip and becoming thick.

I just switch from the Tombow Permanent to a Kukoyo runner because I found that things were falling off my pages/projects with time... The only reason I went with Kukoyo is because I had read good things about it on AE's blog... I also use the Pioneer Embellishment Glue stick for certain things... I don't think I have found my dream adhesive yet though...

I'm all over a rolled adhexive by Sookwang, comes in a ton of different widths. And if I lay it down by oops and need to get it up, I heat it with my heat gun or pour undo and up it comes.

Aleene's tacky glue is great for chipboard. Love U-hu glue stick for covering chipboard with pp too.

Also love glue dots for flowers and buttons.

Not a fan of liquid tombo.

My favourite glue is Henzo photo glue. I did like MM ribbon glue though

What a great post - it's good to see everyones preferences. The roller I used the most is not available at the moment (I've only ever seen it on the UK QVC- Xyron glue runner and refills)so I've ordered some other ones to try - Scrapbook Adhesives roller, Kukuyo and Therm O Web (which no one seems to have commented on). These are all from recommendations. We'll see how they all do!
I so surprised that a couple of people don't like the Making Memories ribbon glue - I LOVE it! I've never had it bleed but then I use it quite sparingly. I use it on all my ribbon, felt and fabric. It holds so well.
I haven't found any repositionable glue that works (I've tried Tombow and American Craft and they're both pretty poor).
Oops - long post - sorry!

I actually really like the Kukuyo tape runners but have big difficulty in finding refills for them since just about all the local scrapbook stores in my area have gone out of business and the Micheals and AC Moore don't carry them. But for the most part I use my ATG gun for everything. I absolutely LOVE IT!! It has made scrapbooking 10x faster for me with this gun and my paper and pictures actually stay stuck to layout.

For ribbon I have found that either a small tape roller or the small xyron machine works perfect. It gets adhesive on all parts of the ribbon without seeping through and it stays stuck down.

I"m an adhesive junkie!! (I haven't ventured into the ATG gun territory though) I am currently using for "rollers" Fiskars and Kukuyo. I love glue dots and have recently started using "Yes" paste for larger applications (it's not suppose to warp the paper like other wet adhesive)

Jodee said...

I really like the Tombow permanent dots! Much better then the mono adhesive which I have trouble getting on evenly. I also use Glue Dots for bulky items. I also like the Zig liquid glue for chipboard and some of those heavier or skinnier items. Thanks for your opinions! It's fun to see what others are using.

Amy said...

i love the therm-o-web adhesive roller ~ although some refills work better than others ~ can be frustrating at times....
for smaller things like chipboard letters, i like the zig 2 way glue pen...
and i love the foam dots....not a snob about which ones i use. my current favs came from the $1 spot at target a few years ago. so sad i'm running out of them :(

I love love love the Liquid glass by Close to my Heart, it dries fast and holds excellant. My husband loves it too for household use. For my ribbon I use double sided tape, the red rolls and pop dots for buttons metal or bulky things.
