Product Spotlight: Homefront by Studio Calico and a giveaway!

{Reported by Aly Dosdall}

When I first saw all the layouts popping up online using Studio Calico’s debut line, Homefront, I was intrigued with the cute vintage look and yummy colors. I loved all the layouts I saw. But I’ll be honest (isn’t that how we roll here at TSR??) and tell you that I wasn’t quite sure what I would do with it. I knew I wanted to have some, but thought it would be a challenge to actually use it. Boy was I wrong! I can truly say I have loved working with this line.

What it is:
Studio Calico is a popular monthly kit club. Their kits always impress me and often sell out quickly. I knew when I heard they were coming out with their first line that it wouldn’t disappoint. The 50’s domestic-inspired line includes 6 double-sided patterned papers, die-cut label stickers, 2 sets of alpha stickers, FabRips (strips of fabric backed with adhesive that you rip apart), and a set of 4 double-sided journaling cards. The papers and journaling cards are sturdy cardstock, the fabrips are easy and fun to use, and the label stickers are heavy cardstock as well.

What I liked:
1. The colors are happy, fun, and fresh. There is a good mix of neutral background papers, and brighter papers.
2. The FabRips adhesive sticks well, but they can also be repositioned if you don’t quite get them where you want them on the first try.
3. They include extra vowels with their letter sticker sets—who doesn’t need an extra “e” or “a”??

What I didn’t like:
1. While I love this line, I do wish there were as many generic patterns as there are themed patterns. I think the “domestic” theme is cute and fun, but a few more generic patterns would increase the usefulness of the line.
2. I hope they come out with some embellishments (ie buttons, trimmings, etc). I’d love more!!

What I made:

Materials Patterned papers: Studio Calico; Letter stickers: Studio Calico; Label stickers: Studio Calico; FabRips: Studio Calico; Die cut stickers: Studio Calico, Scenic Route (heart); Font: CK Truetype; 3D Dots: EK Success; Other: vintage buttons, machine stitching

Materials Patterned papers: Studio Calico; Fabrips: Studio Calico; Border punch: Fiskars; Distress Ink: Ranger; Other: vintage button, machine stitching

Where and how much:
Product name: Homefront
Manufacturer: Studio Calico
MSRP: $.77-$5.50
Available at: Two Peas in a Bucket, Stop and Scrap, A Million Little Things*

Wrap up:
I really had fun working with this line. Although I was worried about how I would use it, I didn’t need to be. It was easy to work into projects and I love the colors, patterns, and products. They’re great quality and I totally recommend getting your hands on some ASAP!

What do YOU think?
Do you like the Homefront line? Would you buy some and use it? Are you as happy as I am that Studio Calico has launched their debut line, or do you think they should stick to monthly kits? Studio Calico has graciously donated the entire line to one lucky person who leaves a comment! How great is that!!?

I just ordered the journaling stickers. I think they will go well with vintage products and ATC. I struggled with how to use the PP as well.

What a great line! I could totally see using this! I'd probably put it towards a mini-book honoring my grandmother, THE domestic engineer! :)

So far, I only have the cut-outs but they're just so darn cute and nostalgic. The paper is a good weight and I loved the quality of the printing.

I've never purchased a Studio Calico kit, but they always look like something I'd like to buy. I agree that it would be nice to see some more generic patterns from SC.

I think this line is super cute! I can totally see myself using this on a bunch of layouts because we have been majorly renovating our house for the last two freaking years! (that is not a joke, unfortunately!). Some cute paper like this might just help me regain some of my lost sanity (might!).

I think it's great they tried their own line and hope they do so again.

Thanks for the opportunity and great job with the reviews!

Stefanie said...

I love the idea of the fabrips - sounds like an easier way to use ribbon.

Love this line! Reminds me of my childhood... I think that would be how I used it.. as a memories page about growing up in the 70s/80s.

I love the line. I think what Studio Calico's design team did with the new line was amazing. Very inspiring. I wouldn't mind having some to play with! ;)

I definitely like it! The colours remind me of my Grandmother's kitchen, and would be great to scrap the many photos I have of her.

Fun line. Thanks for a chance to win. I'm -- ahem! -- old enough to see where this line would come in handy. I have some old B&W photos w/chairs and such very similar to what I see in these papers. The colors would be a fun contrast to these B&W family pics. Fun!

Emily Pitts said...

great review aly, i'm glad you had a similar experience to me–it was a little scary at first, but then i fell in love with it! this is a great line, full of fun and classic designs. love the alphas so much.

I like it, it's different. I'm not sure what I'd do with it, but I'd figure something out!

Carrie said...

I really like the vintage-y feel but in light colors. I have some great photos from the 60's of my family and my husband's family and these are just what they call for.

As to a kit club making paper, I think it is fine, as long as their kits stay great. I think the primary focus should always be the kit.

I used to subscribe to Studio Calico, but just had too many kits backing up and until I had more time to scrap, had to cancel. I am now nearly finishing them and hope to re-subscribe as their taste is incredible.

Mandy said...

Love this new line by SC!If the manufacturer side of SC is anything like the kit side the next release of SC product will just blow us away with awesomeness!

Lauren said...

I agree that they could use some more "generics" with the papers and I would love to see more embellishments from them. Stamps too... LOVE their stamp design! Over all, its fantastic!

gilroy gal said...

When I first saw it I thought the same as you.."Cute, but how much would I actually use it?" After seeing what you did with it, my little mind is now churning with all sorts of cute ideas! Thanks for opening my mind to some fun uses!

This is a great retro paper that I would love to do some older pictures layouts!

Erica Hettwer said...

I'm thrilled that SC came out with this line. With so many companies going out of business it's nice to see one adding onto their business!

Jodee said...

I'm not sure about this line myself. I like that they are making product lines. But, I'm not big into the vintage look and style. So, I hope that they come out with some other stuff too.

Jackie said...

What a beautiful line! I love the retro feel, I would definatley use it :)

moonlightgrrl said...

i love Studio Calico! they've been making their exclusive papers and stamps for a while to include with the kits, and they are all so fresh and of wonderful quality. it seems only natural that they'd take this foray into the manufacturing world. and i think HomeFront is a gorgeous line... i wasn't positive about it at first either, but after seeing all the lovely things that could be done with it, i know i NEED it for my stash.

Stephanie said...

Love this line!!! So fun and fresh!

SC is evolving SO SO nicely. I am excited for them and those of us who love SC to be evolving into a manufacturer, like Jenni Bowlin. I love that they are producing lines like this one and yet keeping up with excellent customer service and their kit club continues to be top notch!! I haven't gotten this line yet, but it won't be long!

If I was going to be working on my family history projects, this would be a must have. Because I am not a great retro artist, I'd probably not even try this. It is cute, but probably not me.

Ooh, I kinda like that! =) I really love their kits, so yeah, I'd love their to see what SC has up their sleeve! ;)

Moe said...

wow, you may have changed my mind. I too loved the colors and retro feel but was afraid it would be a challenge to use with my pictures. I would be willing to give it try thank to your reviews!

Janine Rachau said...

Obviously, I'm not a genius because it took me forever to find the link to comment. :)

But, it doesn't take a genius to appreciate some awesome patterned paper. I think that it was a bold step to start their own line, and they went with something different. It is very cool and vintagy,..love the mix of muted and bold colors and the papers are perfect for heritage pages or projects. Your projects are fabulous,...esp. LOVE the card!

I hope they try another line. I think they are on to something good....

I have subscribed in the past to SC and loved most of what i have gotten. This line doesn't really do much for me - but I know its great quality and in their past paper lines, they have included the tear off strip on the paper which I love. I love what you did with the collection but none of this line speaks to me. Hoping for future lines to be more my style.

Karen said...

i love this line too! great use of the product.

i LOVE that they've come out with their own line! it seems like a natural progression for folks who do kits so well!

Ooh! I love the retro designs. I can see your point on wanting more generics, but I suspect as soon as they did that I would start craving more of their snazzy graphics. I guess I feel I'd have better luck finding complementary prints from my stash than satisfying a need to go overboard ;) I want to decoupage Home Front on a bunch of housewares and make a "lamp" lamp, a "chair" chair, and so on. My living room needs a focal point... OK maybe just the lamp and save the other yummies for cards.
