Start Scrapbooking Your Essential Guide to Recording Memories

{Reported by: Mandy Starner}

Memory Makers Books has been publishing wonderful idea books for quite some time now, and Start Scrapbooking Your Essential Guide to Recording Memories, written by Wendy Smedley is no exception! This book is filled with 20 step-by-step techniques and over 100 beautiful layouts for your viewing pleasure.

This book covers EVERYTHING a new scrapbooker would need to know. Starting with "why do people scrapbook?", then it goes over the different tools, the many versions they all come in, and how to use them. It also explains things like using ephemera on your layouts, journaling, themes, and basic design principles. There is a whole section on photos. It covers digital photos, restoration, storage, and organization. And throughout the entire book you will find very useful tips, planners, checklists, and worksheets. There REALLY isn’t anything that this book doesn’t cover.

Start Scrapbooking Your Essential Guide to Recording Memories is perfect for somebody who is just getting started, but there is so much information and inspiration packed inside (including sketches) that just about any scrapbooker could find this book useful.

What I liked:

The book is spiral bound! This makes it very easy to lay the book out on your desk for reference while you are working.

There are sketches! I love sketches! There is a section on sketches and how to use them in the design chapter, and in the back of the book, there are bonus sketches.

I think they did an excellent job explaining all of the different tools you will need/want to use. There are so many different types of tools out there...scissors, and trimmers, and punches (oh my! I can remember walking into my first scrapbook store... my eyes just glazed over. I didn't know where to begin! This book will tell you what all the tools are, and how to use them.

What I didn’t like:

I thought that the first chapter might be a little bit overwhelming, they throw a lot of information at you at once. Other than that, I think the book was well planned out and it covers every question I had as a new scrapper.

I can't say that I(being a well seasoned scrapbooker) really learned anything new. This really is a book for beginners, but I certainly found some inspiration in the example layouts and I enjoyed working with the sketches.

What I made:

Using the sketches in the back of the book, I made the following layouts:

The Day You Turned Six

Supplies used: Patterned Paper- Crate Paper, Die Cut- Martha Stewart, Punches: Fiskars, Martha Stewart, Ribbon: May Arts, Staples- Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher, Stamps- Studio Calico, Ink- Tim Holtz

Party Boy

Supplies used: Patterned Paper- Crate Paper, Cardstock Stickers- Crate Paper, Alphabet Stickers- Sassafras, Twine: Shabby Green Door, Ink- Maya Road, Color Box

Where and How Much:

Product Name: Start Scrapbooking You Essential Guide to Recording Memories

What I think:

I think that this is an EXCELLENT source for a new scrapbooker. It covers everything a person needs to know to get started. I love that it explains many things that other books (who shall remain nameless) don't cover. The tips are very helpful, like how to sharpen a punch and tips on how to take a better photo. I wish there were books like this when I started scrapbooking.

I usually don't buy scrapping books, just because of space issues, but I do love to check them out at the library.

Looks like this might be an excellent refresher course for those who have taken time off from their hobby.

I love reading scrapbook books, even introductory ones, as there is always something I can learn or be inspired from them. I've never heard of this one. I'd love to be able to give it as a gift (after reading it first, of course!)

I love Wendy Smedley! I sat by her at a Stacy Julian class and she was so sweet and cheerful and fun! I'm sure her book is exactly the same and I'd love to have it.

I enjoy the inspiration that I get from looking at the way other people use their tools, embellishments, and their ideas. If you've been scrapping for awhile, and maybe took some time away from it, this book might be useful to refresh you on some of the new stuff on the market. I am always fascinated with sketches, and how each person can take the same sketch and come out with something completely different from the next. Fun!

Great review. I would love to have this book to give to our church crafters group ... many of our scrappers are beginners and this would be great inspiration for them!

This would be a great resource for anyone new to scrapbooking, or wanting to add more pizzazz to their pages. I always get lots of ideas from books and magazines, though I don't usually buy books - save my budget for supplies!

I like Memory Makers books-- they are very well-done. This would be something that I would consider giving as a gift to some of my friends who don't quite understand scrapbooking but want to archive their stories through more than just their photos.
