Sakura Gelly Roll vs Uniball Signo..White pen showdown!

{reported by: Shelley Haganman}

VS

It's the battle of the white pens here on The Scrap Review! Many years ago I had trouble finding the elusive white pen but now they can be found in plentiful supply at any LSS! I love how these pens standout on dark paper and they are the best for doodling, creating your own designs and journaling or drawing on photos! Today I would like to take a look at both of these pens and give you my opinion on which I feel is the better pen. Let the showdown begin!

First up....Sakura's Gelly Rol white pen (medium). This pen is a gel ink pen with archival qualities (waterproof/fade resistant/chemically stable). It's the size of a pencil so it makes for easy handling and feels "right" in your hand. It has a "rollerball" action and seems to write fairly smoothly. On textured surfaces it has a little trouble. I like that there is no smearing or bleed through. I like this pen and it produces a decent image although I felt that the ink was more opaque.

Next up....Uniball's Signo white pen. This pen is also an archival gel pen which has been dubbed the "unicorn" of white pens! The pen is a bit thicker than the Sakura pen. It handles quite well and it also has a "rollerball" action. I feel that this pen gives you a thicker, richer, heavier line which looks more like the consistency of white-out. It also does well on dark papers and photos. It also did not smear or bleed through.

I would have to say that overall the Uniball Signo pen is the champion. I love a good dark line even in black pens so this pen delivers on that front. I also like that the ink just seems to "flow" better from this pen. I felt that I had to "redo" lines a lot with the Sakura pen because it's line just wasn't dark enough or thick enough for me and didn't flow as nicely. I like that both pens are archival safe and both performed well on dark paper. The Uniball pen also seemed to do better on textured paper and photos than the Sakura pen.

What do you think? Do you have either of these and how well do they work for you? Let us know!

I have the Uniball and I love it! It's been some time since last time I've used it, perhaps it's time for it to come out from the hidings again?

What about American Crafts, do they have any good white pens?

I've been pretty pleased with my Uniball... though I haven't tried the Sakura before. Sometimes it seems to take a while for the Uniball ink to start flowing freely, but on the whole it's the best white pen I've ever tried.

I've tried both, and I wasn't happy with the Uniball. It never worked for me, and I purchased 2 at the same time. I prefer the Sakura. I never had any problems with it. Right now the white pen that I use the most is (I forget the brand) but I think it's Sakura and it's the one that puffs up a bit (and becomes lighter) once it dries.

I've tried the White Pigment Galaxy Marker from AC, and I like it for what it is... a white marker (it has a thick line). I would like to try their white pen though.

I have the Gelly Roll because my LSS didn't have the Signo. I definitely plan to switch the next time although the Gelly Roll does do the job when I need it to :)

I have both...I used them for different reasons.... (different doodling mostly). But my go-to of the two is the Uniball!!

I have both use them. My go to is the UniBall and I'd be more apt to buy that again.

I have the GellyRoll in both white and black. I've encountered the same problems you mentioned with both colors. I also find it takes forever to dry on sleek surfaces like journaling tags. I'll try the Signo next time I see it. Thanks!

Hands down, the Uni all the way...I usually keep 3-4 on my table or in my totes at all times :)

Kristina Werner did a video review of different white gel pens some time ago. I seem to remember that she also preferred Uniball... The only type I found locally here was a white paint pen - it works, but it's nib is pretty large for delicate or small writing...

Hmmm, I will have to look for the Uniball one. I have yet to find a white pen that works half as well as any of my black pens. Very frustrating!!!

The Uniball is tops in my humble opinion. I love to both write and doodle with it!

I think I need to order me a new white pen! The Uniball sounds like just what I need.

Thanks for this. I went out and bought the Uniball pen.

I have tried every white pen, painty pen, gel pen, puffy pen that comes in white that's out there, and Signo remains my go-to fave. Love the thickness of the lines, and it generally writes very smoothly. Just give it a little extra time to dry!
